Meta information, full text and thumbnails are extracted from documents, images, music and other media allowing quick and accurate information retrieval.

Similar to the application WhereIsIt, but also similar to Google Desktop Search, Kat is completely written in C++, and designed for the KDE desktop environment.

The application is based on the extensible plugin architecture in order to facilitate the creation of new media managers for emerging file formats.

Information retrieval relies on the powerful SQLite3 embedded database engine.
