Great post & way for new users to enjoy Linux. I have always used VMware player to run my Windows application inside Linux. Though I had only a comment on the way you had created your VMX file. I believe there is an alot easier method to create one specially for newbies. They might want to try VMX Builder which is a free utility that can build a VMX file by answer few simple questions.
